Rich Smoker is a master carver
from Marion Station,Maryland. He is originally from the Susquehanna
River area of Pennsylvannia. For 18 years Rich was a noted taxidermist.
He now creates wildfowl he has observed in both PA and the Chesapeake
Bay region. In competition, Rich has won over 400 ribbons, including
50 "Best in Show" and a third in the 2001 Ward World
Championship Carving Competition with a Long Eared Owl. In 2001,
he was inducted into the Carver's Hall of Fame at the Waterfowl
Festival in Easton, MD. He is also the secretary for the Carver's
Committee for the Waterfowl Festival and a member of the Board
of Trustees of The Ward Museum. In 2002, Rich was the featured
carver for the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD. His project
for the festival titled "Hardscrabble" is pictured
above. Rich has taught classes for the Ward Museum, The Chesapeake
Bay Maritime Museum, Whitehall Studio, the University of MD
Eastern Shore Elderhostel Program and various clubs throughout
the region. He is a much sought after instructor and presides
over some wonderfully fun and enriching classes.
